There was plenty to like about his debut effort at Pontefract last month and that experience is likely to have benefitted him greatly. This son of Pivotal ought to have few problems with today’s underfoot conditions and he is fancied to get off the mark.

Today’s tip comes from Nottingham where KRYPTON FACTOR needs only a modest amount of improvement to land this. Stepped up from a respectable Wolverhampton debut to score LTO at Hamilton. He wandered all over the place that day and the win was better than the margin of victory suggested. Will need Seb Sanders to be strong with him today but with the trip and ground in his favour, he looks set for a big run.

Today’s tip comes from Nottingham where FIELD DAY returns to make her much anticipated second appearance. Brian Meehan’s charge won nicely at the first time of asking last season and is bred to keep improving with age. The step up to a mile is set to suit and the maiden she won has thrown up plenty of subsequent winners so she looks very likely to continue her progression today.

Today’s tip comes from Nottingham where the unexposed SULIS MINERVA receives weight all round for taking on the opposite sex. Last seen chasing home Free For All at Folkestone recently and this race has already thrown up a few winners who were behind our selection that day. There’s a case for today’s 5f perhaps being more suitable for her and she is looking well weighted to at least have a big say in the finish.

Today’s tip comes from Nottingham where Tim Easterby has the consistant AMETHYST DAWN running in the 14:50. This horse has only won 1 race to date but has placed on 5 other occasions from her 16 runs. She has finished 2nd on three seperate occasions all off the mark of 61 which she runs off today. All of those 2nds were on Good To Firm or Good going and with her only win to date coming on Soft ground then it can be argued that today’s ground conditions will suit her perfectly. Her only other run on Soft going came in September 2008 when she was 5/16 in a Class 3 handicap at Doncaster so that does nothing to sway our confidence in her.

Today’s tip comes from Nottingham where Ryan Moore partners one of Sir Michael Stoute’s promising young colts in KRYMIAN. The stable have been very impressed with this horse’s attitude and speed at home and feel this is the perfect place for him to improve on a battling second place at Wolverhampton last time out. The 2-y-o failed to cut much ice on his racecourse introduction at Sandown, but there was plenty of confidence behind him when he was switched to the all-weather for his next start. For a long way it looked as though the gamble would be landed as the grey eased to the front passing the two-furlong marker, but he was caught in the dying strides by Miss Starlight. The son of Bahamian Bounty clearly shows a fair level of ability at home and with normal improvement, he will be hard to beat in division one of the Buy A Racing Post Yearling Bonus Candidate Maiden Stakes (3.40).

Today’s tips come from Nottingham where Tom Eaves takes the ride on a very tough horse and Newcastle where Mark Johnston bloods a horse with smart pedigree.

SECRET VENUE has been running better than his recent form figures suggest and looks overpriced in the 5f handicap at Nottingham today (2.50). He rattled off a fast-ground hat-trick at Musselburgh earlier this year, and although that course suits his front-running tactics well, he ran at least as well at York in July, just caught in the final strides having fared much the best of the three horses that contested the early lead at a strong pace.

Next time at Musselburgh he went off even quicker up front along with Sandwith, and they both faded badly in the final furlong. He then had a six-week break before running an excellent race at Doncaster, always prominent as usual but racing more towards the centre of the track in a race where high-drawn horses, and those racing closer to the stands rail, dominated; it’s worth noting that amongst the three or four horses who raced with him towards the centre of the track were Invincible Lad and Go Go Green, both of whom won next time.

The other factor that interests me is that Secret Venue is returning to a 3yo-only handicap here for the first time since that York run. Three-year-olds do worse against their elders in sprints than at other distances — their record this year is just 15 wins from 237 runs and a return on investment of only 0.54 (54p per £1 staked), whereas at 2m, for instance, backing all 3yos in 3yo+ handicaps this year has shown a small profit (11-48, +3.33). Secret Venue is a game horse — it’s no coincidence his four wins have all been by a neck or less — and he’s capable of a big run at a big price.

The second selection comes at Newcastle where Joe Fanning takes the ride on PENTOMINIUM. Mark Johnston has a knack of getting his horses fully tuned up for maidens like this and rumours coming from the stable are that this horse could be pretty handy. Half brother to smart 10-12f winner Epatha, this horse will take some beating in this company.
