INVINCIBLE LAD hasn’t had things go his way lately, but he must have good prospects of bouncing right back to form in the valuable 5f handicap at Southwell today (4.20). There is no shortage of interesting runners in this race, as you’d expect for the money, but Invincible Lad has so much in his favour that he still looks the one to beat. He has shaped as if in form on each of his last four starts; after finishing a staying-on third in a competitive Goodwood handicap in July, he hasn’t had the run of the race in his last three starts, including when racing widest of all from his low draw at Doncaster last time (ended up closer to the far rail than the stands one). However, what really makes his prospects appealing here is the fact that he won his only previous race here in runaway style, storming clear to win by five lengths, a margin that would have been much bigger had his rider driven him out to the line. That was in a much weaker race, but the time was good and he completely outclassed his rivals that day. He was ridden by Kieren Fallon last time, but the jockey booking today is hardly a negative, given that Pat Cosgrave has ridden him three times and won on all three occasions, whilst he’s also unbeaten in three starts on the all-weather.
